IDEA Regina A grassroots alliance...

IDEA Regina has been advocating with the City of Regina for a number of years.  The attached letter is our latest correspondence in this regard.  In our letter we are tryig to make it clear that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Person who have a Disability (CRPD) applies to municipal governments.  We encourage the city to look to Article 9 of the CRDP for guidance in developing a comprehansive plan.

IDEA has also received the following invitation to a “sounding session” regarding a planned “population study of four priority groups including the disability Community”.  IDEA will be represented at this session and will be reporting further on developments.

Dear Doug,

You are invited to a “Sounding Session” sponsored by the City of Regina.

The City of Regina is in the process of developing a new Official Community Plan (OCP) that will guide the city’s long-term growth.  As part of this process, the City is engaged in four priority population studies. This research will examine trends in the disability community, recent immigrants, the First Nations and Métis communities and seniors communities.  The studies are intended to inform both the City’s and the public’s understanding of general characteristics and trends, city-wide patterns, current government and community roles, key community assets, issues and opportunities to be considered in the future.

As a stakeholder with recognized knowledge and interest in the disability community, you are invited to participate in the sounding session to bring your experience and knowledge of the issues and challenges of your community.

Doug Elliot of SaskTrends Monitor and Bonnie Durnford and Rob Cunningham of D. C. Strategic Management will be providing background information to ground the discussions.  Susan Jarvis will be facilitating the session.

The Sounding Session will be held at:

Date: February 24th, 2011
