Background on Disability

General Overview 

Individuals with disabilities are socially and economically disadvantaged because of the lack of targeted supports.  Individuals with disabilities are marginalized and experience:

poverty

discrimination

unemployment & underemployment

exclusion from the labour market

low education & skills training attainment

institutionalization

poor, unsafe & non-accessible housing

  • 3.6 million people or 12.4% of the Canadian population have a disability people or 14.5% of the Saskatchewan population have a disability

     

  • 39.4% who need help with everyday activities don't have all they need

     

  • 51.2% of those with disabilities are employed versus 82.3% of others

     

  • 42.7% of those with disabilities are not in the labour force versus 12.5% of others

     

  • 27.9% of those with disabilities experience low-income versus 10.2% of others

     

  • Working-age Canadians with disabilities took in 72% of the average income of those without disabilities.
